As previously posted here, Scion of Manhattan is proudly partnering with The Bowery Mission in holding a coat drive throughout the month of February. Here is some additional information about the Bowery Mission!
The Vision
In New York City 3,000 people live on streets, in parks and on subways. Another 37,000 live in the city’s shelter system with no place to call home. They are trapped for many reasons: chronic substance abuse; financial instability; the pain of past abuse; shame and guilt; disconnection from family; and most of all, a loss of hope in the future. To transform the lives of homeless men and women in New York City, The Bowery Mission provides effective programs and creates partnerships that serve immediate needs and provide long-term solutions.
Since 1879 The Bowery Mission has met the short-term, emergency needs of hurting New Yorkers with compassionate care services – food, shelter, clothing and medical care. We invite all of our guests to make a permanent life change through our residential recovery programs – counseling, spiritual formation, life-skills training and continuing education opportunities, legal aid, and job and housing placement.
Strategic Initiatives
The Bowery Mission & Discipleship Institute
This historic rescue mission opened in 1879 and now serves more than 800 meals daily, has more than 500 patient visits a year in its clinic, and collects more than $3M annually in donated food, clothing and other products. Its residential recovery component, the Discipleship Institute, graduates 80-90 men annually to transformed lives of lasting productivity, sobriety and hope.
The Bowery Mission Women’s Center at Heartsease Home
Opened in 2005, 20 women reside at a time in the only faith-based residential recovery
program for women in Manhattan. The Women’s Center assists women with everything they need to thrive emotionally, spiritually and economically.
The Bowery Mission Transitional Center
A first-of-its-kind partnership with the City of New York, the Transitional Center has been rated among the City’s best substance abuse programs for the past 15 years. We successfully place more than 90 men out of the shelter system annually.
Don’t Walk By
Don’t Walk By is a coalition of faith-based organizations, congregations and volunteers coordinating services and life transformation for New York City’s homeless. During our January 2011 outreach, 1,400 volunteers engaged 900 homeless men and women on the street. More than 80 left the streets.
Historical Overview
The Bowery Mission first opened its doors as a refuge for the hurting and vulnerable in 1879. Current President Ed Morgan has carved out a new direction for The Bowery Mission in the past 20 years, partnering with the City on the Transitional Center, creating the Discipleship Institute, and meeting the needs of rising numbers of homeless women with the Women’s Center at Heartsease Home. Since 1995, The Bowery Mission has more than tripled its revenue, grown to include 40,000+ active donors, hosted high profile events such as the annual Valentine Gala and Women’s Center Auction, and served and transformed the lives of thousands in New York City.
Every day, The Bowery Mission serves men and women caught in cycles of poverty, hopelessness and dependencies of many kinds. Every day, we seek to see their lives transformed to hope, joy, lasting productivity and spiritual wholeness through God’s love.
